Singles and Pairs

A category of hands on the NMJL card requiring only single tiles and pairs — no groups of three or more. Cannot use jokers.

Definition

Singles and Pairs is a special category on the NMJL card where winning hands consist entirely of individual tiles (singles) and pairs — no pungs, kongs, quints, or sextets. Because there are no groups of three or more, Jokers cannot be used in these hands. All Singles and Pairs hands are concealed, meaning you cannot call any discards except the final winning tile.

How It Works in Gameplay

Singles and Pairs hands are uniquely challenging. You cannot use Jokers, and you cannot expose any tiles, so you're entirely dependent on your draws from the wall. The upside is stealth — opponents have zero information about your hand since nothing is exposed. These hands are worth significant points because of their difficulty. Many players switch to a Singles and Pairs hand when their initial plan falls apart and they find themselves holding scattered tiles.

Example

After the Charleston, your hand is a jumble of unrelated tiles — a single Flower, a pair of West Winds, a single 9 Dot, and various others. Rather than forcing a grouped hand, you spot a Singles and Pairs hand on the card that matches several of your tiles. You quietly draw from the wall each turn, swapping in tiles that fit and discarding the rest. No one suspects you're close until you call "Mah Jongg" on a discarded 4 Crak.
