Wall Game

A hand that ends with no winner when all tiles from the wall have been drawn.

Definition

A wall game occurs when every tile in the wall has been drawn and no player has completed a winning hand (Mah Jongg). The hand ends in a draw, no points are scored, and the deal passes to the next player. Wall games are a normal part of American Mahjong — not every hand produces a winner.

How It Works in Gameplay

As the wall shrinks, players must weigh offensive ambition against defensive caution. Pursuing a difficult hand becomes riskier as fewer tiles remain. Experienced players may abandon a long-shot hand and shift to pure defense, discarding only safe tiles to avoid giving an opponent their winning tile. When the last tile is drawn and no one has won, the game simply moves on.

Example

Three players each need just one more tile to win, but the wall is down to its final four tiles. Each player draws cautiously, discarding tiles they know are safe. The last tile is drawn without completing anyone's hand. "Wall game," someone announces, and the tiles are reshuffled for the next round.
