Mahjong Clubs in Houston, TX

Houston has a real mahjong scene. Bam Good Time lists 14 clubs in the city, and the range covers everything from casual neighborhood groups to more structured sessions. It's not the biggest scene in Texas, but it's enough to find a regular game if you put in a little effort.

The clubs here reflect how American Mahjong tends to spread: through community networks and word of mouth. Simply Mahj LLC runs structured games and is a good first call if you want something organized. Memorial Mahj plays in the Memorial area, one of the more active pockets for the game on the west side of the city. Joy Luck Mahjong leans into the social side, and American Mah Jongg Houston keeps things straightforward for players who want a no-frills game. Rory Bellow is also listed and is worth checking if those don't fit your schedule.

If you're new, American Mahjong uses the National Mah Jongg League card, which changes every year and lists every hand you can win with. You'll need a copy before your first game. Most clubs play the Charleston, a tile-passing ritual at the start of each hand that shapes your strategy before a single tile is drawn. Tables need exactly four players, so showing up solo is fine as long as the group has room. A good first step is to contact a club directly, tell them you're learning, and ask if they run beginner-friendly sessions. Most groups are used to teaching newcomers.

American Mahjong as played across the country follows rules codified in the mid-twentieth century and has grown steadily in recent decades, with clubs now in every major metro. Houston fits that pattern.

We have 14 clubs listed on Bam Good Time for Houston. If you run a club that isn't in the directory yet, you can add a listing so local players can find you.
